In Samskara: Disrupted Reality, I drew and painted three different faces in charcoal and acrylics, one at a time over the previous face, while adding more collage components in between each layer. The collage elements include fabrics, papers, mono prints, doilies, encaustic pages, and washi tapes. I normally draw and paint over fabric and paper collage, but with this piece, my intention was to capture multiple split second moments as one. The use of shear collage elements and transparent application of the paint allowed for the history of marking to illustrate the subject’s change of mind. Samskara is a Sanskrit word for an act of making perfect preparation or putting oneself together to mark a major event in one’s life. In Two Second Reaction, I played with capturing a timed event by using a divided space. In Change of Mind, I experimented with capturing this mental action using a divided face and distance from the viewer. The layered collage elements represent the stratified aspects of the psyche.
