Thank you Didi for sending me this photo way back when! Here's to you Leslie- we all miss you! And Armen, this is the last piece of your Mother's red kimono that you had given me. Here's to all the women we love that are no longer with us in form but are with us in our hearts and minds.
Authenticity
The washi tape on the bottom of this piece refers to Chopin's Authenticity of One in G flat major, but I'm using the title to refer to a conversation we had at my last workshop where I did this piece as a demo. The conversation was about workshop participants and the work they create in that workshop- whether it is theirs or not. My philosophy in teaching is about showing and explaining new techniques and helping people foster their own voice with what they've learned. Classes where the students copy their teacher's work may have its place, but not with me. I want to shake loose new ideas from people's minds but in their style and their own time frame. I think I do that. I want you to create your own work, to show, share and sell. I love getting emails from you showing me your latest creations! Keep the authenticity coming!

Experience the joys and secrets of combining mixed media fabric and paper collage with drawing and painting. Students are encouraged to incorporate some of their own prior art work into new pieces. The materials used will be the choice of each student. Participants are encouraged to use materials that they have. The workshop will address working with collage with papers, fabrics, found objects, past art work, pencil and charcoal drawing, and acrylic painting. The objective of the workshop is to explore new mixed media techniques, entertain the idea of re-purposing prior work and excavate each student’s authentic voice in their art. Participants are responsible for supplies – a list will be provided.
Teacher’s Note: I encourage everyone to incorporate mixed media collage into what they already do! I will work with each of you on whatever style project you would like to work on whether it is faces, figures, landscapes, still lives or abstracts. We collage on the first day and then draw and paint on the second day. There are no set rules in my workshops. I try to create a fun time that introduces new techniques and a comfortable learning environment to enhance where you already are. All levels are welcomed!

Fantastic workshop at the Art League of Daytona
There is nothing more satisfying for an art teacher than seeing the whole energy of the room become electrified with ideas and possibilities. This happened over the past two days at the Art League of Daytona. The energy was so great that I had the experience of finishing a piece I love too. (I'm calling it Fields Near Jersey.) What a fantastic group of ladies you all are! I'd love to see more of your mixed media work as you finish it so send more photos. Here's a sampling of the fun that was had.
